This volume is part one of a five-part story.
“Something is wrong with this town…”
On the surface, Haven Park seemed to be the perfect picture of Americana. Nestled in the heart of Wyoming, its 517 residents were close knit, hard working and God fearing people. The city had never known major scandal, and the last violent crime committed was over ten years ago. Normal, right and honorable were upheld and all seemed to be quite harmonious…until the night of July 4, 1966, when the walls came closing in and the secrets could not be kept any longer.
It started with a murder. Carol Mathison, a lifelong resident and the only daughter of retired police chief Stanley Rogers, was found strangled in the park on the morning of July 5, leaving the community stunned. By all accounts, Carol was vibrant, well liked, outgoing and cheerful – making her murder all the more senseless. However, as the days drug by, more and more began to be revealed about Carol’s darker side…and the many, many people who might have wanted her dead.
The killer is closer than they know…

Unfortunately, the ending was a complete cliffhanger; it completely felt like I had just read half of a book and was cheated out of the other half. Story - Carol Mathison has been murdered which comes as a shock to the entire small town of Haven Park, Wyoming. After all, everyone loved Carol, right? Not exactly. It seems everyone in the town has a secret, and many of these dirty little secrets involve Carol to some degree. With tensions flaring between many of the residents of Haven Park and relationships budding between many others, it's hard to tell who's your friend, who's your foe, and who's a murderer. Writing Style - The author starts out very well in this Kindle edition by providing histories/descriptions for each of the major characters in the novel, which there are about twelve of. The mystery is then well... It's a murder mystery and by the end, you will not know who did it. We'll need to wait a little long before that. Independence Day is not a cheerful read. The characters lead difficult lives in a very real-world sense, full of internal conflicts and hard relationships. Bex's characters are very tangible, very real. This story is mostly about the people surrounding the central murder, not about the actual investigation of it. While there is a great deal of exploration of the victim and her relationships with the rest of the town, there's no investigation of the physical evidence surrounding the crime. So, if you're looking for a very involved, very character-driven mystery, this is good for you. Not such a great fit for those more interested in police procedurals. I enjoyed the book and will be looking forward to the next one. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: ![]() Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Independence Day, Book One: The Beginnings (Kindle Edition) First, Congratulations, well done.I'm giving this Author 5 stars. The story also gets 5 stars because it made people want to read it, and we did, didn't we ? It's a beginning to greatness Bex Aaron and I for one am looking forward to the next part of this story. I won't give a synopsis, because its already given before anyone downloads this free book. I liked the characters. I was surprised they were introduced before the story, but as I read on, that particular style gave me a quick reference guide. I was able to flash back in memory of each characters intro and note if they flowed throughout the story, they did. There were random errors in sentence structure, however, they never got in the way of what the author was trying to convey. I read another review where it stated the obvious, there is little to no mention of the era as a whole. No descriptions or scenery that depicts this story happening in the 60's era... Read more |
