I'm occasionally a fantasy junkie and they start to all seem the same after a while. This fantasy book stands apart from the crammed bookshelf. Great things about this book: The female protagonist is NOT a rebel against all she was taught, nor is she a natural warrior who just needed to hold a sword to start killing things. The male protagonist has awesome physical prowess, yes, but he worked and sweated and bled for his skill. Best of all...NO INCAPACITATING ROMANCE!!! Now I like a good fantasy/romance as much as the next reader, but the improbabilities of boy meets girl, on the run from the Great Powers, both fall in love, ridiculous amounts of misunderstanding that would never happen if they actually SPOKE to each other and then the sexual chemistry in life-or-death situations when one would normally be focused on survival...well, that seems as much a fantasy as magic and dragons. I did feel there were some parts that were odd. Such as characters using an item or making a comment that doesnt seem to jive with the setting. For example I cant imagine their clothes having a "fly" but when a soldier attempts to rape a member of the group, another memeber is thinking about how he cant find his "fly". There are several things like that make it hard for me to really understand the world that is being shown in this story. I would get into the scene and then something someone used or said would bring me back to modern life. that part was not nearly as annoying as what happened at about 75%. it seemed that we now quit using the shift key and quit running grammar check. it was often enough to be disturbing. as you can see, it causes you to take a bit longer to read and get the right thought because your mind now has to slow down and seperate the sentences and thoughts. i would say it was at least everyother sentence for the last 3-4... Taylor is a brilliant writer in his use of structure and traditional elements of story telling. The arc of the story proceeds well and the plot is articulated and clear. The characters, however, are the strong part of this book. You love some and you hate others. You laugh, you cry and their trials affect you while you are reading. Cons: I wanted it to be longer. LOL. No I'm kidding. Weaknesses. I think Mr. Taylor's writing can be scattered at time. There are details in epic fantasy that, while important to the world building, I find annoying. I don't think that is so much Mr. Taylor's writing style but more the genre. Its really hard to world build without the details. I'm also not really sure where the author is going with Sasha's and Legon's relationship. Siblings or Soulmates? I think you could make an argument either way. Overall, I loved this book. I listened to the original podcast and the written version had me doing loops with the... Read more |
